Basic Types of Bass Guitar

There are basic types of guitar too. The bass guitar has four or possibly five basic parts: the body, the neck, the head stock, and the bridge.

The body of the guitar is the largest part and the heaviest. It is attached to the neck and the head stock. The bridge helps secure the guitar in position on the body. The sound hole, which is positioned at the edge of the body and not inside, helps focus the sound from the guitar onto the body and to help maintain tone. Fret boards are located on the neck of the bass and they are used to create various sounds during playing.

A fret board consists of frets, which are metal strips that aid in producing different tones. These are set at intervals along the neck. Frets generally come in sets of two vertically-oriented, parallel rungs. Vertical grooves are called fret dividers and they split the frets. They facilitate the easy movement of the strings.

A head stock styles is a small hinged piece that the strings of the bass guitar are attached to. The tuners are found on the head stock. Tuning screws are located in the neck of the bass. The strings are secured to pegs, which are shaped locks. Fret rosin, which must be applied to the bow of the strings, is located in the bridge. This also enhances string tone.

The bass guitar produces a rich, deep, yet subtle sound. It has a larger body than an electric or acoustic guitar. The tuning keys on the bass are spaced wider than those on the other types of guitars. They have to be adjusted to obtain the right tone. The strings are tied into a gear box. This has a turning thumb stud, which the strings are anchored to. Once the string has been tied into the gear box, a string limiter, which limits the free movement of the string, is attached to the gear box. A tuning fork, tuner, and a bass tuner are sometimes used as other audio components.

Bass playing is relaxing. It allows one to focus on the deeper meaning of the musical concepts. Those that are interested in learning more about bass playing should read about the different types of bass guitars. They are the most basic of all the different types of guitars. A bassist should look into the type of bass guitar they need to suit their bass playing needs.”–Traditional Guitar Store

Basses may be classified according to the voices they produce. The four most commonly used are:

•Acoustic•Electonica•Electronic•Platinum

Each category has its own uses in the construction of a bass guitar.

These are the 4 most common:

•Acoustic: Produces clear, mellow bass. Often played with guitar-type accompaniment. E.g., acoustic/electric, acoustic/electric with Tommy Lee; acoustic/electric, acoustic/electric, and bass-type rhythm accompaniment.

•Electronic: Usually played with guitar-type accompaniment, but can be played with other instruments. E.g., electro-acoustic, electro-acoustic. Electro-acoustic guitars may use pickups to convert the electrical signal into the acoustic type. Electric basses may use either solid or liquid plumbing. Some have built-in electronics and signal relays to produce theoustic effect. The electronic bass is quieter than the acoustic bass, but the tradeoff is that the electronic accompaniment sounds somewhat artificial.

•Platinum: Comes with either solid or liquid plumbing. Generally acoustic, tuning Ellis or Dreiten models. The sound is one of the best in the business. The electronics areResearch Specialties, Inc. (RSI), PortaSound, Silvertone, and Telefunken. A few recent introductions includeause DO, Rocktron, DiMarzio, kespio, and Liftun.

•Acoustic Basses: Immaculate craftsmanship. Usually solid wood. approx. 8″ shorter than a 6 string bass. 4-ply maple or sycamore tops. Aromatic rosewood back and sides. exactly 1.5″ depth. Best Brecker, Sonor, and Takamine basses in this price range are fine instruments. Ceetano, Eastone, Prewer, and clones are the most popular.

•Electric Basses: Produce a nice amplified acoustic sound. Not much difference between these and the acoustic basses. However, the electrics sparkle and platinum basses are more expensive, approximately $500.00 ea.
